Becoming a successful real estate agent takes more than just getting your license. It takes focus, hard work, dedication, and a willingness to continuously learn and grow. If you’re up for the challenge, though, the rewards can be great. Here are three keys to success as a real estate agent.
Stay Focused
The first key to success in real estate sales is staying focused. This means having a clear understanding of your goals and knowing exactly what needs to be done in order to achieve them. It’s easy to get sidetracked when you’re working on a commission basis—after all, there’s always another deal around the corner. But if you want to be successful, you need to resist the urge to take on too much work and instead focus on quality over quantity.
In a conversation, we had with Jessica Peterson and Gary Barnes, they told us the secret to being successful in life begins with clarity. This includes writing down your goals, creating vision boards, and being precise on exactly “what” you want.
Build a Strong Network
As a real estate agent, your network is your bread and butter. The stronger your network is, the more likely you are to succeed. Spend time networking with other professionals in the industry, such as mortgage brokers, title companies, and home inspectors. But don’t stop there—get to know the people in your community as well. Get involved in local events and activities, and get to know the ins and outs of the neighborhoods you’ll be working in. The stronger your network is, the easier it will be to find clients and close deals.
Going a step forward, network with your past clients. When you have a strong network, including your past clients, this will increase your chances of getting more referrals. We took the time to sit down with Michael Maher and talk about referrals and how to get more referrals from your network.
Stay Up-to-Date on Industry Trends
The real estate industry is constantly changing, so it’s important that you stay up-to-date on the latest trends. Read industry publications, listen to podcasts, and attend conferences and seminars. The more knowledgeable you are about the industry, the better equipped you’ll be to serve your clients and close deals.

Strong Work Ethic
This one is pretty self-explanatory. In order to be successful in any field, you need to have a strong work ethic. That means being punctual, organized, and always putting your best foot forward. But in real estate, it also means being available when your clients need you. That might mean working weekends or evenings, but it will be worth it when you close the deal.
Additionally, it’s important to focus on the basics of being a real estate agent and succeeding at those factors. It’s easy to jump to the newest strategies for lead generation and follow-up. Although adopting new strategies and tactics could bring you success, it’s equally important to work hard at the strategies and tactics that brought you success in the first place.
Continuously Learn and Grow
The most successful real estate agents are lifelong learners. They’re always looking for ways to improve their skillset and grow their business. Take classes, get certified, and invest in yourself both professionally and personally. The more you grow as an individual, the more successful you’ll be as an agent.
If you’re thinking about becoming a real estate agent or are looking to further your success, keep these keys to success in mind in mind. Building a strong network, staying up-to-date on industry trends, and continuously learning and growing will help you succeed in this competitive industry.
